I’m a toast fanatic and I’m always looking for yummy spreads to pair with it. I especially love anything spiced and with the heart of the Fall season being here, I thought it was finally time to try making some apple butter. Not just any either, but an easy slow cooker apple butter. Because like I’ve said before, yummy things like butters, syrups and jams can be super easy to make. So, while you can make apple butter on the stovetop, today I’m sharing an even simpler way.
The caveat with making apple butter in the slow cooker and it being easy peasy is that it will take a long time, but worth it for the ease of the recipe.
I also share this recipe in hopes to not only inspire you to fill your fridge and pantry with this goodness, but to also think about making these to give out this season as gifts of thanks or as holiday gifts. I’m a big supporter of homemade and baked goods as gifts!
Easy Slow Cooker Apple Butter
Servings: 12 oz
Ingredients:
- 8 large apples, peeled and sliced (I used granny smith)
- 1 1/2 TBS pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- 1 TBS ground cinnamon
- 1 TBS all-spice
- 1/4 TSP salt
- 1 cup apple cider
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 TBS lemon juice
Directions:
- Set your slow cooker to low and cooking time will be 8 hours, set to high and cooking time will be 5 hours. If you’re in no rush and want your home smelling like absolute deliciousness all day long, I would make the apple butter on low. However, both times work.
- Place the peeled and sliced apples in a slow cooker. Pour in the sugars, cinnamon, all-spice, salt, water and apple cider. Mix very well.
- Begin cooking, stirring occasionally, until 1 hour is left of the allotted cooking time or until mixture is thick and dark brown.
- Stir in vanilla and lemon juice and continue cooking without lid for 1 hour.
- Pour mixture into a blender or use an immersion blender to puree the apple butter until smooth or to the consistency of your liking. I prefer it very smooth, others like it with some apple chunks in the mix.
- Pour the apple butter into mason jars, cover and refrigerate. Apple butter will last 2 weeks in the fridge. If you want to freeze the apple butter, make sure the containers you store it in aren’t glass.
I love using apple butter on toast, waffles, english muffins and even on pork chops or chicken!
