Although growing up in a city known for it’s tropical flavors, I could count the number of times I’ve eaten papaya on one hand. Not because I don’t enjoy the taste, it’s just never on my radar. While brainstorming cocktail ideas the other day, I was trying to come up with not only a delicious combination of flavors, but one that was also colorful and perfect for this season and the next. Enter this Spicy Papaya Tequila Cocktail.
The color of this cocktail so beautiful! And with papaya being a sweet, but not overly indulgent fruit, I thought it would pair nicely with some heat. When it comes to this addition, I went with jalapeño and love the way it tastes. However, if you prefer spiciness to heat, chili would be a great alternative. You could incorporate it into the drink itself or just coat the rim of the glass with chili powder.
The color combination is so good 😍
Spicy Papaya Tequila Cocktail
Servings: 2
Ingredients:
- 2.5 oz freshly-squeezed orange, not bottled OJ
- 1 oz freshly-squeezed lemon
- 4 oz tequila, I used reposado
- 1 cup of papaya chunks, muddled very well
- substitution note: 4 oz 100% papaya juice/nectar in place of muddled papaya.
Directions:
In cocktail mixing glass, muddle the papaya chunks in the orange and lemon juice. Strain into another glass, empty the mixing glass and then return liquid (which at this point is fresh papaya juice, lemon juice and orange juice combined) to the mixing glass. Fill glass with ice and pour in tequila. Stir well. Serve evenly into to cocktail glasses.
