You know I love making simple syrups for everything from coffee to cocktails and when I was thinking of which ones I’d create for this season I knew I wanted to make a gingerbread syrup. I thought it would be the perfect addition to so many classic cocktails to give them a holiday twist and also inspire me to create a few creative seasonal ones too. Today I’m sharing my Gingerbread Old Fashioned recipe.
It’s very close to the classic Old Fashioned recipe, with only replacing one original ingredient: swap the sugar with gingerbread syrup. So, bourbon lovers will stay loving this drink if they’re open to a hint of holiday spice. Both my husband I loved it!
Gingerbread Old Fashioned
Ingredients:
- 2 oz bourbon
- .5 oz gingerbread syrup (recipe below)
- 3 dashes orange bitters
- cinnamon stick for garnish
- 1 large square or round ice cube
To make gingerbread syrup:
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 2 TBS molasses
- 3 1 inch slices of ginger
- 2 teaspoons all-spice
Bring all ingredients to a boil for 3 minutes. Once sugar dissolves completely, lower heat and let mixture simmer for 5 minutes. Remove ginger slices and pour syrup into heat-safe container (I use mason jars). Store in fridge up to 3 weeks.
To make Gingerbread Old Fashioned:
In a mixing glass with ice, pour bourbon and gingerbread syrup. Mix well, 30 seconds. Pour through strainer into a cocktail glass with one large ice cube.
